Genetic selection for PDO supply chains

Collaboration with ANAS

Bompieri Group has a long-standing collaboration with ANAS – Italy's National Association of Pig Breeders – for the development of traditional Italian breeds (Large White, Landrace, and Duroc). Particular attention is dedicated to Landrace genetics and the creation of high-performing hybrids suited to PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) production systems.

Today, a significant share of our production comes from matings between animals registered in the Italian Herd Book, certified by ANAS as "Traditional Italian Breed." All farms operate in compliance with the PDO Parma Ham and PDO San Daniele Ham production specifications, ensuring full quality and traceability.

Genetic Centre and Artificial Insemination

Breeding animals intended for sow farms and the AI Centre are produced within a dedicated genetic facility, ensuring consistent quality and high health standards. This approach ensures the production of high-health-status gilts, further reinforcing the Group's biosecurity and overall herd health.

The Group also operates a public, multi-brand Artificial Insemination Centre, open to external clients and maintained PRRS-free through strict biosecurity protocols and continuous monitoring.

Research and Innovation

In 2017, Bompieri Group took part in a research project with the University of Parma aimed at identifying environmental factors that can influence boar semen quality for artificial insemination.

At the same time, the Group established ongoing collaborations with leading companies in the reproduction sector. It was among the first in Italy (since 2011) to introduce innovative technologies such as Collectis for semen collection and CASA (Computer Assisted Sperm Analysis) for computerised semen evaluation. Bompieri also partners in the development and testing of new materials and products for artificial insemination, contributing to progress and innovation in the field.

Advanced Technology

These solutions, combined with climate-controlled barns equipped with air-filtration systems, guarantee high hygiene standards, a lower microbial load, and greater accuracy and objectivity in semen evaluation.

The integration of advanced technologies and state-of-the-art facilities allows the Group to maintain the highest quality standards in genetic production.
